Welcome to Kayak for the fun of it!

I created this site to share what I have learned about sea kayaking and related subjects. I first got started in kayaking in my teens after looking through a book with plans how to build a canvas-back. I built the frame but never finished it, but that didn't diminish my dreams for boating. I took up sailing for 16 years until late 2005, when I bought my first kayak, a used Current Designs Storm. It was a great starter boat that gave me the stability to learn and polish my paddling, rolling and bracing techniques. Its plastic composition took the abuse from paddling in shallow rivers and reservoirs.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many skilled kayakers that have mentored and given me guidance over the years. As I became more aware of what I didn't know in being a skilled paddler, I took advantage of going to 3-day kayak symposiums in Muskegon, Michigan, hosted by the Western Michigan Costal Kayakers Association (WMCKA). One can gain a large amount of practical knowledge through hands-on workshops with excellent instructors and seasoned professionals. Iv'e had the pleasure of instructing and assisting in many classes over the years.

At the 2006 WMCKA symposium, I purchased my second kayak, a fiberglass Legend, designed by Nigel Foster. This is an excellent kayak that has challanged me and will join me in new adventures with confidence. Like your favorite pair of jeans, this boat can't be beat for fit, durability, design and great looks. I later sold the Storm and re-invested the return for much needed gear for expeditions.

The desire to build my own kayak finally became a reality in the Fall of 2009. My good friend and I decided to plunge into researching and building our own West Greenland skin-on-frame kayaks - a journey that was a fantastic 150+ hours in creativity. Check out the building page.

I hope you find this site enjoyable, After all, I kayak for the fun of it!
